“I went thru a lot of difficult times to have
my children here, my family united.. I would be out on the road for three days
without eating anything or just drinking water. When I would get to the orange
groves I would say, “Thank you God, I made it.” I would eat oranges
to lessen the hunger and I got to sleep under the bridges, too. And when I had
no place to stay, I got to sleep in some park in Indio where there were some big
pipes laying there. I remember the police were patrolling but they could not see
me. I would sleep there until somebody recognized me and would say, “Come
and stay with us.” Then they would help me get a job.”
